Chapter 5, Problem 5QP
As it turned out, one of the tallest Potsdam Guards had an unquenchable attraction to short women. During his tenure as guard, he had numerous clandestine affairs. In each case, children resulted. Subsequently, some of the children—who had no way of knowing that they were related—married and had children of their own. Assume that two pairs of genes determine height. The genotype of the 7-foot-tall Potsdam Guard was A9A9B9B9, and the genotype of all of his 5-foot clandestine lovers was AABB. An A9 or B9 allele in the offspring each adds 6 inches to the base height of 5 feet conferred by the AABB genotype.
- a. What were the genotypes and
phenotypes of all the F1 children? - b. Diagram the cross between the F1 offspring, and give all possible genotypes and phenotypes of the F2 progeny

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive condition. Therefore, heterozygous (Cc) carriers do not display symptoms. Two parents who are carriers plan to start a family and you are a genetic counselor helping to advise them about their chances of having children affected by CF.
a) Suppose the couple has 4 children, each one year apart. What is the probability that all 4 children will inherit CF?
b) What is the probability that any 3 of their 4 children will not inherit CF, but 1 will be affected?
c) What is the probability that their first child will not inherit CF, but the younger 3 children will inherit CF?
Please answer both questions in detail. Correct answers are highlighted.
I will be adding two questions here because I asked two of the same questions twice by accident earlier.
A man and a woman do not have hemophilioa, but the womans father did. (Hemophilia is X-linked recessive).
a) What is the probability that they will have a child with hemophilia?
b) Is it possible for any of their daughters to be affected? Explain.
A cross between a horse homozygous for red hair and a horse homozygous for white hair results in offspring with the coat colour called roan. When you look at the fur of the roan offspring you see both red and white hairs. What type of inheritance best explains this?
a) blending inheritance
b)codominance
c)incomplete codominance
d)multiple alleles

To better understand the situation, you investigate Jonah’s Xist chromosome region in his defective muscle cells. Which of the following is consistent with his phenotype? (Select all that apply.) The Xd-containing chromosome is inactive in defective muscle cells. The XD-containing chromosome has a methylated Xist promoter. The XD-containing chromosome has an unmethylated Xist promoter.
