Whether there is a true quiescent stem cell in the crypt. Considering all the recent intravital imaging of the crypt, debate on label-retaining cells a quiescent, reserve population of stem cells.

Introduction:

The intestinal epithelial lining projects millions of finger-like villi into the lumen for nutrient absorption, and base of each villus sinks into a steep valley called a crypt connecting to adjacent villi.
