In June 2002, the Department of Health and Children in Ireland began a program to distribute tablets of potassium iodate to households as part of Irelands National
Emergency Plan for Nuclear Accidents. Potassium iodate provides iodine, which when taken during a nuclear emergency, works by “topping off “ the thyroid gland to prevent the uptake of radioactive iodine that might be released into the environment by a nuclear accident. To test the potency of the tablets, a chemist dissolved one in 100.0 mL of water, made the solution acidic, and then added excess potassium iodide, which caused the following reaction to occur.

- One method for determining the purity of aspirin (C9H8O4) is to hydrolyze it with NaOH solution and then to titrate the remaining NaOH. The reaction of aspirin with NaOH is as follows: A sample of aspirin with a mass of 1.427 g was boiled in 50.00 mL of 0.500 M NaOH. After the solution was cooled, it took 31.92 mL of 0.289 M HCl to titrate the excess NaOH. Calculate the purity of the aspirin. What indicator should be used for this titration? Why?arrow_forwardA 1.345-g sample of a compound of barium and oxygen was dissolved in hydrochloric acid to give a solution of barium ion, which was then precipitated with an excess of potassium chromate to give 2.012 g of barium chromate, BaCrO4. What is the formula of the compound?arrow_forwardThe carbon dioxide exhaled in the breath of astronauts is often removed from the spacecraft by reaction with lithium hydroxide 2LiOH(s)+CO2(g)Li2CO3(s)+H2O(l) Estimate the grams of lithium hydroxide required per astronaut per day. Assume that each astronaut requires 2.50 103 kcal of energy per day. Further assume that this energy can be equated to the heat of combustion of a quantity of glucose, C6H12O6, to CO2(g) and H2O(l). From the amount of glucose required to give 2.50 103 kcal of heat, calculate the amount of CO2 produced and hence the amount of LiOH required. The H for glucose(s) is 1273 kJ/mol.arrow_forward
- According to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), waste material is classified as toxic and must be handled as hazardous if the lead concentration exceeds 5 mg/L. By adding chloride ion, the lead ion will precipitate as PbCl2, which can be separated from the liquid portion. Once the lead has been removed, the rest of the waste can be sent to a conventional waste treatment facility. How many grams of sodium chloride must be added to 500 L of a waste solution to reduce the concentration of the Pb2+ ion from 10 to 5 mg/L?arrow_forward3.88 One Step in the enrichment of uranium for use in nuclear power plants involves the reaction of UO2 with hydro- fluoric acid (HF) solution. The products are solid UF4 and water. Write a balanced chemical equation for this reaction.arrow_forwardRelative solubilities of salts in liquid ammonia can differsignificantly from those in water. Thus, silver bromide issoluble in ammonia, but barium bromide is not (thereverse of the situation in water). Write a balanced equation for the reaction of anammonia solution of barium nitrate with an ammoniasolution of silver bromide. Silver nitrate is soluble inliquid ammonia. What volume of a 0.50 M solution of silver bromidewill react completely with 0.215 L of a 0.076 M solutionof barium nitrate in ammonia? What mass of barium bromide will precipitate fromthe reaction in part (b)?arrow_forward
- Citric acid, which can be obtained from lemon juice, has the molecular formula C6H8O7. A 0.250-g sample of citric acid dissolved in 25.0 mL of water requires 37.2 mL of 0.105 M NaOH for complete neutralization. What number of acidic hydrogens per molecule does citric acid have?arrow_forwardMagnesium metal (a component of alloys used in aircraft and a reducing agent used in the production of uranium, titanium, and other active metals) is isolated from sea water by the following sequence of reactions: Mg2+(aq)+Ca(OH)2(aq)Mg(OH)2(s)+Ca2+(aq)Mg(OH)2(s)+2HCl(aq)MgCl2(s)+2H2O(l)MgCl2(l)electrolysisMg(s)+Cl2+Cl2(g) Sea water has a density of 1.026 g/cm3 and contains 1272 parts per million of magnesium a5 Mg2+(aq) by mass. What mass, in kilograms, of Ca(OH)2; is required to precipitate 99.9% of the magnesium in 1.00103 L of sea water?arrow_forwardA student mixes four reagents together, thinking that the solutions will neutralize each other. The solutions mixed together are 50.0 mL of 0.100M hydrochloric acid, 100.0 mL of 0.200 M of nitric acid, 500.0 mL of 0.0100 M calcium hydroxide, and 200.0 mL of 0.100 M rubidium hydroxide. Did the acids and bases exactly neutralize each other? If not, calculate the concentration of excess H+ or OH ions left in solution.arrow_forward
- A 2.5624-g sample of a pure solid alkali metal chloride is dissolved in water and treated with excess silver nitrate. The resulting precipitate, filtered and dried, weighs 3.03707 g. What was the percent by mass of chloride ion in the original compound? What is the identity of the salt?arrow_forwardThere are many ionic compounds that dissolve in water to a very small extent. One example is lead(II) chloride. When it dissolves an equilibrium is established between the solid salt and its component ions. Suppose you stir some solid PbCl2 into water. Explain how you would prove that the compound dissolves but to a small extent? Is the dissolving process product-favored or reactant-favored? pbcl2(s)pb2+(aq)+2cl(aq)arrow_forwardEthanol, C2H5OH, is a gasoline additive that can be produced by fermentation of glucose. C6H12O62C2H5OH+2CO2 (a) Calculate the mass (g) of ethanol produced by the fermentation of 1.000 lb glucose. (b) Gasohol is a mixture of 10.00 mL ethanol per 90.00 mL gasoline. Calculate the mass (in g) of glucose required to produce the ethanol in 1.00 gal gasohol. Density of ethanol = 0.785 g/mL. (c) By 2022, the U. S. Energy Independence and Security Act calls for annual production of 3.6 1010 gal of ethanol, no more than 40% of it produced by fermentation of corn. Fermentation of 1 ton (2.2 103 lb) of corn yields approximately 106 gal of ethanol. The average corn yield in the United States is about 2.1 105 lb per 1.0 105 m2. Calculate the acreage (in m2) required to raise corn solely for ethanol production in 2022 in the United States.arrow_forward
