Experiment: The Time Needed To Drain a Bottle
Supplies needed:
• A clear 2-liter plastic bottle (or larger) with a hole drilled near the bottom of the straight-walled portion. The heights in the table below should be marked on the bottle either with a permanent marker, or by attaching a paper strip with height markings. Height zero should be marked at the height of the hole. Experiment with the hole size so that it takes roughly three minutes for the bottle to drain. About 1/4 inch is a good place to start.
• Water and a bucket to drain water into.
• A watch that displays seconds. The stop watch feature on a smartphone works well.
Use your model to predict the time when the water in the bottle reaches 2 cm above the drain hole. How does this compare to your experimental data?
