Chapter 44, Problem 44.1CR
Summary Introduction

To determine: The environmental conditions under which water moves inside a cell by osmosis.

Introduction: The phenomenon of “osmoregulation” regulates the movement of water and ions inside the cell. Osmosis is a type of diffusion in which water, ions, or molecules pass freely from a more concentrated area to less concentrated area through a semipermeable membrane.

Explanation of Solution

There are majorly three types of osmotic conditions namely hypotonic, isotonic, and hypertonic solutions. Water enters into the cell by osmosis under hypotonic conditions. The hypotonic solutions are the solutions in which outside solution has a lower concentration of solute than the inside solution. When a cell is exposed to such types of conditions, water moves into the cell.

Conclusion

The environmental condition that regulates the movement of water into the cell is hypotonic condition.
