Explanation of Solution
An atom is unstable if the nucleus has excess of energy due to the presence of excess neutrons or protons. These are also radioactive atoms. Radioactive atoms emit radiation because their nuclei are unstable.
Unstable nuclei lose their energy in a spontaneous process by emission of radiation. This process is known as radioactive decay. Unstable atoms undergo radioactive decay until a stable atoms, possibly of a different element is formed.
Hence, an unstable atom becomes stable by undergoing radioactive decay until it becomes an element.
