In general, the term fluctuation represents irregular variations. In science, the fluctuations can be described as the changes that vary or change time to time or location. Fluctuations could be referred to a variation in quantity of something, variation in quality, or both.

For example, fluctuation in a number of species represents the variation in the number of different species.
