Concept explainers
To identify:
Each pattern of dispersion as represented in the given diagram.
Introduction:
All species are found in groups called populations. The members of a single species that share the same geographic location at the same time are called population. Populations of species are described by density, spatial distribution and growth rate. There are some limiting factors also that keep population from growing indefinitely.
Answer to Problem 5MI
Explanation of Solution
One important characteristic of a population is called dispersion- the pattern of spacing of a population within an area. There are three main types of dispersion pattern.
- Random- Individuals in this type of dispersion have no predictable pattern. White tailed deer are dispersed randomly throughout appropriate habitats.
- Uniform- Individuals in this type of dispersion are more or less equally spaced apart. American black bears are usually dispersed uniformly within territories as large as several hundred square kilometers. Females have smaller territories that overlap those of males.
- Clumped- Individuals in this type of dispersion are found in clusters or groups. American bison are found in clumped groups called herds.
One important primary factor in the pattern of dispersion for all organisms is the availability of
