The resolving power of a microscope was increased by using the immersion oil. It was attained by immersing the objective lens and the slide containing the sample in transparent oil. The immersion oil increases the numerical aperture of the objective lens as it has a high refractive index. Placing of immersion oil helps the light to travel at a uniform speed and it does not refract. Cedar wood oil is commonly used as immersion oil.
