An object of mass M is held in place by an applied force

44. Any device that allows you to increase the force you exert is a kind of machine. Some machines, such as the prybar or the inclined plane, are very simple. Some machines do not even look like machines. For example, your car is stuck in the mud and you can’t pull hard enough to get it out. You do, however, have a long cable that you connect taut between your front bumper and the trunk of a stout tree. You now pull sideways on the cable at its midpoint, exerting a force f. Each half of the cable is displaced through a small angle θ from the straight line between the ends of the cable. (a) Deduce an expression for the force acting on the car. (b) Evaluate the cable tension for the case where θ = 7.00° and f = 100 N.

- R3arrow_forwardA 4.00 kg block slides on the surface of an inclined table, which makes an angle of 15.0° with the horizontal. The block is connected through cords over two pulleys to a 7.26 kg bowling ball on the upper side of the table, and a 3.00 kg ball on the lower side, as shown in Figure A1.16. The pulleys are massless and frictionless, while the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the table's surface is 0.470. a. Draw a free-body diagram for each moving object. b. Determine the direction of motion and acceleration of the system. c. Calculate the tension in each cord. 7.26 kg 4 kg 15° 3 kg Figure A1.16arrow_forward58. - Try again. A 4.6 kg body is at rest on a frictionless horizontal air track when a constant horizontal force F acting in the positive direction of an x axis along the track is applied to the body. A stroboscopic graph of the position of the body as it slides to the right is shown in the figure.
