Answer to Problem 54AP

The coefficient of the linear expansion of metal is 2.5×106C1 .

Explanation of Solution

Given info: The initial length of the metal is 10.0cm , the wavelength of the light is 500nm , the change of the order of fringes is 200 and the refractive index for air and the increased temperature is 20.0°

The condition for the constructive interference is,

2nt=(m+12)λ (1)

Here,

n is the refractive index for air.

m is the order of the fringes.

λ is the wavelength of the light.

t is the thickness of the film.

Substitute 1 for n in equation (1).

2×1×t=(m+12)λ2t=(m+12)λ (2)

Rearrange the equation (2) to find the t .

t=(m+12)λ2

The initial thickness of the film is,

ti=(mi+12)λ2

Here,

ti is the initial thickness of metal.

mi is the initial order of fringe.

The final thickness of the film is,

tf=(mf+12)λ2

Here,

tf is the final thickness of metal

mf is the final order of fringe.

Since, the temperature slowly increases, the rod undergoes an expansion in the length and the thickness of the air decreases.

Δl=titf (3)

Here,

Δl is the change of the length of the metal.

Substitute (mf+12)λ2 for tf and (mi+12)λ2 for ti in equation (3).

Δl=(mf+12)λ2(mi+12)λ2=(mfmi)λ2 (4)

The change of the order of fringes is,

Δm=mimf

Here,

Δm is the change of the order of fringes.

Substitute mimf for Δm in equation (4).

ΔL=(mf+12)λ2(mi+12)λ2=(Δm)λ2

Formula to calculate the coefficient of linear expansion of the material is,

α=ΔLLiΔT (5)

Here,

α is the coefficient of linear expansion of the material.

Li is the initial length of the metal.

ΔT is the changed temperature.

Substitute (Δm)λ2 for ΔL in equation (5).

α=(Δm)λ2LiΔT (6)

The change of the temperature is,

ΔT=TiTf (7)

Substitute 25.0°C for Tf and 0.0°C for Ti in equation (7) to find the ΔT .

ΔT=25.0°C0.0°C=25.0°C

Substitute 200 for Δm , 500nm for λ , 10.0cm for Li and 25.0°C for ΔT in equation (6).

α=200(500nm(109m1nm))210.0cm(102m1cm)25.0°C=2×106C1

Conclusion:

Therefore, the coefficient of the linear expansion of metal 2.5×106C1 .
