Chapter 37, Problem 17TYK
Summary Introduction

To review:

The major groups of organisms that have cryptochrome based on the fact that it is found in both animals and plants derived from their common ancestor.

Introduction:

A class of flavoproteins that is sensitive toward blue light is cryptochromes. Flavoproteins are proteins having riboflavin derivative of nucleic acid. These cryptochromes are involved in circadian rhythm. There are two genes responsible for coding the cryptochrome protein, Cry1 and Cry2. In plants, this protein is responsible for mediating phototropism and photomorphogenesis. In animals, it is involved in capturing light and other circadian rhythms.

Evaluate the following statements about seeds from two biology textbooks: I. The seed coat is an adaptation that protects the plant embryo from damage, water loss, and infection. II. Evolution has come up with a clever solution for protecting plant embryos: seed coats that prevent damage, water loss, and infection. Do these statements accurately represent the evolution of seeds?   a) Yes, both statements are accurate.     b) No, neither statement is accurate.     c) Only the first statement is accurate.
Give typed full explanation  Which of the following statements is TRUE for the labeled structures? (Choose all the correct answers)   a. The structures labeled with the letter a are genetically identical to each other.   b. The structure labeled with the letter b is the gametophyte.   c. The structures labeled with the letter c (the sperm produced by one antheridium) are genetically different from each other.   d. The structure labeled with the letter d is the sporophyte.
The section Evolution of Seeds describes the fossil seeds Archaeosperma arnoldii. Its megasporangium was surrounded by a layer of tissue, called an          that projected upward, and there was a large                 , a hole that permitted sperm cells to swim to the egg. If you have studied flowering plant reproduction, how many of these same features occur in flowering plants?
