Chapter 36.3, Problem 1CC
Summary Introduction

To explain: Why a drop of water collects at surface of rooted stump when cut at dawn, but not in noon.

Concept introduction: The supply of some solutes and water to the aerial system of the vascular plants is conducted by the xylem. There is a network of pipelines extending from roots to the leaves in xylem. Under some conditions like when xylem sap is more dilute than the soil solution water is transported rapidly into the xylem vessel. Solutes and water are essential ingredients of root pressure. The entry of other solutes and water into root cells including xylem tissue of these ingredients is essential for the development of the root pressure.

From an agricultural perspective, describe two advantages of vegetative propagation.
Owners and managers of plant nurseries have to plan lighting schedules for a long-day plant that will flower in February. What lighting periods will be most effective? What color of light should be chosen?
A team of researchers investigated the effects of phosphorous availability and light intensity on an angiosperm species. Seeds of the angiosperm were divided into four equal groups. Groups 1 and 2 were exposed to 200 pmol, and Groups 3 and 4 were exposed to 500 umol. Groups 2 and 4 also received a phosphorous (P) solution. After 20 days, all plants were weighed, and the average dry weight of each group was calculated. The results are in the table below. Group 1(200 pmol, Group 2(200 umol, Group 3 (500 umol, Group 4 (500 pmol no P) no P) +P) Average Dry weight (g) Describe the effects of light and phosphorous on the growth of the plants in this study. Explain how the metabolic processes associated with the plant kingdom likely influenced these results. 10.8 1.5 6.2
