Erythropoietin is an important growth factor that induces red blood cell production in blood. It is commonly called as EPO, which is actually a hormone produced by kidney. When the number of circulating RBC decreases or if the oxygen transport does not function, then the nervous system detects the change and passes the signal to liver where erythropoietin production will be increased.
