Chapter 36, Problem 4CT
Summary Introduction
To explain: Why erythropoietin usage enhance the performance of athletes.
Concept introduction:
Erythropoietin is an important growth factor that induces red blood cell production in blood. It is commonly called as EPO, which is actually a hormone produced by kidney. When the number of circulating RBC decreases or if the oxygen transport does not function, then the nervous system detects the change and passes the signal to liver where erythropoietin production will be increased.

Patients with a history of heart failure often get this history from chronic hypertension. Chronic hypertension leads to a condition called hypertrophic heart disease, or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This means that the heart muscle gets bigger, allowing less room for it to fill with blood. If these patients take beta blockers, such as metoprolol, it will benefit them because the heart will not overwork and grow in size. However, if a patient has pulmonary edema, how could the beta blocker make this patient worse?
One way of reducing risk of cardiovascular disease is to ensure you are getting lots of antioxidants in your diet. What antioxidants would you recommend and not recommend for someone at risk of cardiovascular disease that is also on medication that interferes with their blood’s clotting mechanism? Explain the reasons for your recommendations in one to two paragraphs. Also, list three medical conditions that can alter a person's vitamin requirements. Explain what vitamin/s would be affected and how they should alter their dietary from normal recommendations.
Hyperglycemia associated with diabetes promotes a prothrombotic state by affecting a number of different steps in the clotting pathway. Which of the following would result in

- Coumadin is an anticoagulant drug that is sometimes given to patients who have just suffered a deep vein thrombosis, a pulmonary embolism, a heart attack, or to patients with artificial heart valves. It helps reduce the chance of future clots and the further risk of embolism. The active ingredient in Coumadin is warfarin, a rat poison. How do you think the same compound can be used for these two very different purposes?arrow_forwardOne medication used in treating COVID patients who have been placed on mechanical ventilators is Vecuronium, an acetylchone antagonist at skeletal muscle neuromuscular junctions (NMJs). Vecuronium is used on sedated patients to provide skeletal muscle paralysis, which allows the mechanical ventilator to work without the patient’s diaphragm contracting on its own and potentially working against the ventilator. Please do two things: Explain the way in which the NMJ would cause skeletal muscle contraction in the absence of the medication. Start by describing the mechanism of neurotransmitter release in the presynaptic cell and stop when the first crossbridge cycle is complete. Explain the specific way in which the medication impacts the functionality of the NMJ and skeletal muscle contraction. Cardiovascular disorders such, as heart attack and stroke are among the top ten causes of death. Stroke patients, under certain circumstances, have better outcomes when treated with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). In humans, the PLAT gene codes the tPA protein, and is expressed only in endothelial cells that line the blood vessels. plasmin → fibrinolysis FDP tPA fibrin plasminogen a. How do you think the PLAT gene expression is specifically regulated only in the endothelial cells? Provide two specific explanations. Explain briefly. b. Considering the therapeutic potential of tPA, you and your friend want to produce a large amount of human tPA using recombinant technologies. You suggest cloning the intact human PLAT gene in bacteria to express it and…arrow_forward
- Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) is an endothelial cell-specific receptor that has inherent tyrosine kinase activity. The binding of the Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) ligand to its receptor plays an important role in angiogenesis, a process by which new capillaries are formed. Enhanced angiogenesis is associated with a number of diseases including cancer. Your goal is to develop a homogeneous in vitro TR-FRET kinase assay for VEGFR-2 (purified protein) in an attempt to identify small molecules that inhibit kinase activity and in turn modulate angiogenesis. This condition is associated with mutations in the genes that control anion exchange proteins, specifically the chloride-bicarbonate exchanger Band 3. Explain how the anion exchange proteins work in the capillaries of normal people's body tissue and discuss how this process might be disrupted in alkalosis patients and lead to these symptoms.arrow_forwardIt is known that heparin acts by increasing the activity of antithrombin, causing a conformational change. LMWHs inhibit mainly factor Xa. Although low doses of heparin act primarily by neutralizing factor Xa, at high doses it prevents thrombin-induced platelet activation and prolongs bleeding time.
