To Explain: The reason that the magnet will attract iron at both north and south poles.
Answer to Problem 27A
Magnet will attract a chunk of iron in the both conditions because south and north poles has a property of attraction.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction: Anything that is surrounded by magnetic field and attracts iron or steel objects is called magnet. All metals are out attracted to magnets.
Explanation: Magnets have both, attraction and repulsion, properties. Suppose, there are two magnetic poles which positioned nearer to each other in a manner that one magnet can influence another magnet. If the poles of magnets are unlike then the attraction will take a place. If the poles of magnets are like then the repulsion will take a place.
A magnet will attract a chunk of iron in the both conditions because south pole and north pole acquires the same ability to attract other pieces of iron. Also, magnet induces opposite polarity in nearby piece of an iron; north pole induces south pole, and south pole induces north.
Conclusion: Both poles (north and south) of magnet can attract same amount of a chunk of iron.
