Concept explainers
a.
To explain: The difference between determinate growth and indeterminate growth.
Introduction: The land plants are multicellular and they belong to the kingdom Plantae. It can be distinguished to other living things by several features. The tissue present in most of the plants, which consist of undifferentiated cells is called a meristem. It gives rise to several plant organs and accountable for plant growth.
b.
To explain: The difference between primary and secondary growth.
Introduction: Meristematic cells are usually small and cuboidal with small vacuoles, large nuclei, and thin walls. There are three types of meristematic tissues in the plants, which include apical meristem, lateral meristem, and intercalary meristem. The meristematic cells are closely packed together in the absence of intercellular cavities.

- Show the sequence of secondary growth by drawing the row of cells from the boxed area below and labeling the vascular cambium cell (V), 5 xylem cells from oldest (X1) to youngest (X5), and 3 phloem cells (P1 to P3). Show what happens after growth continues by drawing and labeling a row with twice as many xylem and phloem cells. How does the vascular cambium’s location change? A pear has a hard texture but juicy. State two cells that give the characteristics? State the function of the transitional epithelium found in the mammalian urinogenital system. (i) Identify type of tissue lines the air sacs of the lungs. (ii) Explain how the tissue named in (i) adapted to its function.arrow_forwardIndicate the phase of growth of each of the followinghairs:a. The root is club-shapedb. The hair has a follicular tagc. The root bulb is flame-shapedd. The root is elongatedarrow_forwardBlack spot fungus is a disease that is known to attack roses in humid climates. At first, small black spots appear on the leaves. If left untreated, the entire plant can die. From this information, what is mostly the main cause of the demise? a) The plants’ cells are unable to carry out aerobic respiration. b) The leaves are unable to manufacture enough sugar to maintain the health of the plant. c) The roots are unable to absorb enough water. d) The stems are unable to support the plant.arrow_forward
- what will be the end result of plant growth under sun and those under shade. Explain in two paragraphs?arrow_forward7. a)Tea plants contain several chemical compounds, including tannins and caffeine. What function do both tannins and caffeine perform for tea leaves? b)By what process does water enter the root cells of a plant? c)The blade of the leaf is attached to the stem by a stoma. Is this true or false?arrow_forward#12 Complete the sentences about primary growth. - Using your growth curve determine approximately how long is lag phase? The log phase? The stationary phase? Can you determine when the death phase begins from these data?arrow_forwardIn which two locations shown in the figure does primary growth occur? Select two correct answers.arrow_forwardFifteen years ago, your parents hung a swing from the lower branch of a large tree growing in your yard. When you go and sit in it today, you realize it is exactly the same height off the ground as it was when you first sat in it 15 years ago. The reason the swing is not higher off the ground as the tree has grown is that a. the tree trunk lacks secondary growth. b. the tree trunk is part of the primary growth system of the plant, but elongation is no longer occurring in that part of the tree. c. trees lack apical meristems and so do not get taller. d. you are hallucinating, because it is impossible for the swing not to have been raised off the ground as the tree grew.arrow_forward
