CP A thin uniform film of refractive index 1.750 is placed on a sheet of glass of refractive index 1.50. At room temperature (20.0°C), this film is just thick enough for light with wavelength 582.4 nm reflected off the top of the film to be cancelled by light reflected from the top of the glass. After the glass is placed in an oven and slowly heated to 170°C, you find that the film cancels reflected light with wavelength 588.5 nm. What is the coefficient of linear expansion of the film? (Ignore any changes in the refractive index of the film due to the temperature change.)

- Astronomers observe the chromosphere of the Sun with a filter that passes the red hydrogen spectral line of wavelength 656.3 nm, called the H line. The filter consists of a transparent dielectric of thickness d held between two partially aluminized glass plates. The filter is held at a constant temperature. (a) Find the minimum value of d that produces maximum transmission of perpendicular H light if the dielectric has an index of refraction of 1.378. (b) What If? If the temperature of the filter increases above the normal value, increasing its thickness, what happens to the transmitted wavelength? (c) The dielectric will also pass what near-visible wavelength? One of the glass plates is colored red to absorb this light.arrow_forwardA beam of 580-nm light passes through two closely spaced glass plates at close to normal incidence as shown in Figure P27.23. For what minimum nonzero value of the plate separation d is the transmitted light bright?arrow_forwardBoth sides of a uniform film that has index of refraction n and thickness d are in contact with air. For normal incidence of light, an intensity minimum is observed in the reflected light at λ2 and an intensity maximum is observed at λ1, where λ1 > λ2. (a) Assuming no intensity minima are observed between λ1 and λ2, find an expression for the integer m in Equations 27.13 and 27.14 in terms of the wavelengths λ1 and λ2. (b) Assuming n = 1.40, λ1 = 500 nm, and λ2 = 370 nm, determine the best estimate for the thickness of the film.arrow_forward
- Red light of wavelength of 700 nm falls on a double slit separated by 400 nm. (a) At what angle is the first-order maximum in the diffraction pattern? (b) What is unreasonable about this result? (c) Which assumptions are unreasonable or inconsistent?arrow_forwardA thin film of polystyrene is used as an antireflective coating for fabulite (known as the substrate). The index of refraction of the polystyrene is 1.49, and the index of refraction of the fabulite is 2.409. What is the minimum thickness of film required? Assume that the wavelength of the light in air is 490 nanometers.arrow_forwardA thin glass plate (n=1.56) rests on a small pool of water (n=1.333). Light is incident from air onto the surface of the glass plate. Red light of wavelength 680nm (in air) is observed to be most strongly reflected from the glass. What are the three thinnest possible thicknesses of the glass plate?arrow_forward
- White light falls at an angle of 45° on a parallel soap film of refractive index 1.33. At what minimum thickness of the film will it appear bright yellow of wavelength 5896 Å in the reflected light ?arrow_forwardThere is a thin layer of acetone on the surface of the glass plate. The light, the wavelength of which can be adjusted, strikes perpendicular to the surface of the plate. The film does not reflect light at a wavelength of 600.0 nm, and the intensity of the reflected light has a maximum at a wavelength of 700.0 nm. Calculate the thickness of the acetone layer. The refractive index of acetone is 1.25arrow_forwardA thin uniform film of refractive index 1.750 is placed on a sheet of glass with refractive index 1.50. At room temp. (21.8 C) this film is just enough for light with a wavelength 538.9 nm reflected off of the top of the film to be cancelled by light reflected by the top of the glass. After the glass is placed in an oven and slowly heated to 160 C, you find that the film cancels reflected light with a wavelength 588.9 nm. What is the coefficient of linear expansion of the film? (Ignore any changes in the refractive index of the film due to the temperature change)arrow_forward
- light of wavelength λ in a vacuum has a wavelength of 438 nm in water (n=1.33) and a wavelength of 390 nm in benzene. a) what is the wavelength λ? b) using only the given wavelengths, determine the ratio of the index of refraction of benzene to that of water.arrow_forwardAn engineer, investigating the behavior of radio waves, builds a box 7.20 m long. Inside the box at one end is a small radio transmitter that emits radiation with a wavelength of 0.120 m. A receiver is placed at the other end, 7.20 m away. Assume both the transmitter and the receiver are on the floor of the box. The walls and floor of the box interior are treated to minimize reflection of radio waves. The ceiling of the box interior, however, is metal, so the radio waves can reflect off of it almost perfectly. The radio waves can take two paths from the transmitter to the receiver: a straight-line path, and a path that reflects off the ceiling of the box interior. Note that there is a phase shift when the waves reflect off the ceiling. (a) What is the minimum (nonzero) height of the box ceiling (in m) that could produce destructive interference between the direct and reflected waves at the receiver's location? (b) What If? Some modern Wi-Fi antennas emit frequencies in the 5 GHz band.…arrow_forwardLaser light of wavelength 460 nmnm is traveling in air and shines at normal incidence onto the flat end of a transparent plastic rod that has nn = 1.30. The end of the rod has a thin coating of a transparent material that has refractive index 1.75. a)What is the minimum (nonzero) thickness of the coating for which there is maximum transmission of the light into the rod? b)What is the minimum (nonzero) thickness of the coating for which transmission into the rod is minimized?arrow_forward
