Section 35.1 Interference and Coherent Sources
35.1 Two small stereo speakers A and B that are 1.40 m apart are sending out sound of wavelength 34 cm in all directions and all in phase. A person at point P starts out equidistant from both speakers and walks so that he is always 1.50 m from speaker B (Fig. E35.1). For what values of x will the sound this person hears be (a) maximally reinforced, (b) cancelled? Limit your solution to the cases where x ≤ 1.50 m.

- Figure P36.35 shows a radio-wave transmitter and a receiver separated by a distance d = 50.0 m and both a distance h = 35.0 m above the ground. The receiver can receive signals both directly from the transmitter and indirectly from signals that reflect from the ground. Assume the ground is level between the transmitter and receiver and a 180 phase shift occurs upon reflection. Determine the longest wavelengths that interfere (a) constructively and (b) destructively. - The table contains data obtained during the single-slit microwave experiment with a slit width of 7 cm and a wavelength of 2.8 cm. To compare data like this with theory in Sec. 8.5, you will have to normalize both the intensity and the angular data. A. What is the normalized intensity I/I0 at 40∘? B. What is the normalized angle β/π at 25∘?arrow_forwardA laser beam (λ=513 nm) is put through a beam splitter to give 2 equal intensity beams traveling parallel to one another. One of these beams is directed through a double slit apparatus, and the other beam through a single slit apparatus. The single slit and the double slits are in the same plane and both display fringe patterns on a screen a distance L= 4.4 m away. a. The slit spacing of the double slit apparatus is 0.52 mm. What is the distance from the center of the double slit fringe pattern to the 5th dark fringe? b. If the third dark fringe of the single slit pattern is the same distance from the center of the single slit pattern as the result for part (a), what is the single slit width? To continue, please enter the result of part b) in mm. Round your answer to 2 decimal places.arrow_forwardearrow_forward
- Problem 1: Two out-of-phase radio antennas at ±300 m on the x-axis are emitting 3.0 MHz radio waves. Is the point (x, y) (300 m, 800 m) a point of maximum constructive interference, perfect destructive interference, or something in between?arrow_forwardTwo slits spaced 0.130 mm apart are placed 90.0 cm from a screen and illuminated by coherent light with wavelength 550 nm. The intensity at the center of the central maximum is 4.30×10-6 W/m2. A) What is the distance on the screen between the third bright fringe and the sixth dark fringe? B) What is the intensity at a point midway between the first bright fringe and the second dark fringe? C) Draw a picture of the situation showing parts (a) and (b).arrow_forwardA loudspeaker having a diaphragm that vibrates at 1250 Hz is traveling at 80 m/s directly toward a pair of holes in a very large wall in a region for which the speed of sound is 344 m/s. You observe that the sound coming through the openings first cancels at 11.4 deg with respect to the original direction of the speaker when observed far from the wall. How far apart are the two openings? What angles would the sound first cancel if the source stopped moving?arrow_forward
