Two flat plates of glass with parallel faces are on a table, one plate on the other. Each plate is 11.0 cm long and has a refractive index of 1.55. A very thin sheet of metal foil is inserted under the end of the upper plate to raise it slightly at that end, in a manner similar to that discussed in Example 35.4. When you view the glass plates from above with reflected white light, you observe that, at 1.15 mm from the line where the sheets are in contact, the violet light of wavelength 400.0 nm is enhanced in this reflected light, but no visible light is enhanced closer to the line of contact. (a) How far from the line of contact will green light (of wavelength 550.0 nm) and orange light (of wavelength 600.0 nm) first be enhanced? (b) How far from the line of contact will the violet, green, and orange light again be enhanced in the reflected light? (c) How thick is the metal foil holding the ends of the plates apart?

- Laser light of wavelength 460 nmnm is traveling in air and shines at normal incidence onto the flat end of a transparent plastic rod that has nn = 1.30. The end of the rod has a thin coating of a transparent material that has refractive index 1.75. a)What is the minimum (nonzero) thickness of the coating for which there is maximum transmission of the light into the rod? b)What is the minimum (nonzero) thickness of the coating for which transmission into the rod is minimized?arrow_forwardTwo light beams are incident normal to one surface of a triangular prism with refractive index n = 1.4 surrounded by air. What is the value of the angle between the two emerging beams, shown as a in the figure? d a 90° d 45° O 70.4° 73.7° O 61.8° 60.0° O 65.8° ..... ......arrow_forwardTwo flat glass plates are separated by a distance d = 123 nm. There is a layer of oil between the plates. White light shines directly down on the glass. One ray reflects off the top surface of the top oil layer, and a second ray reflects off the bottom surface of the oil layer. The index of refraction of the glass is na = 1.49, and the index of refraction of the oil is no = 1.25. glass glass a. For each ray state whether there is a ½2 phase change, or no phase change. What is the longest wavelength of light in a vacuum which will give constructive interference for these two reflected rays? nmarrow_forward
- A ray of light originates inside the glass filled with water, as shown in the figure. It travels through water, in incident on the glass side, and emerges into the air. Ignore any partial reflections. What is the values of angles Q? Water n=1.33 370 Air Glass n = 1.0 n= 1.5 32.25° 67.16° 53.17° 35.89°arrow_forwardA glass surface is coated by an oil film of uniform thickness 1.00 x 10-4 cm. The index of refraction of the oil is 1.25 and that of the glass is 1.50. Some of the wavelengths in visible region (400 nm 490 nm) are completely transmitted by the oil film under normal incidence. n x 10 One of the wavelength transmitted completely in visible region is m. Find the value 11 of n.arrow_forwardThere is a thin layer of acetone on the surface of the glass plate. The light, the wavelength of which can be adjusted, strikes perpendicular to the surface of the plate. The film does not reflect light at a wavelength of 600.0 nm, and the intensity of the reflected light has a maximum at a wavelength of 700.0 nm. Calculate the thickness of the acetone layer. The refractive index of acetone is 1.25arrow_forward
- An extremely thin sheet of glass is being inspected at the laboratory. Illuminated by white light at near-normal incidence, the film- like sheet is 0.384 μm thick and has air on both sides. If the glass has a refractive index of 1.66, what wavelength of visible light (in nm) does it reflect most strongly? (The wavelengths of visible light range from 400 to 700 nm.)arrow_forwardYou are standing in air and are looking at a flat piece of glass (n = 1.52) on which there is a layer of transparent plastic (n = 1.61). Light whose wavelength is 640 nm in vacuum is incident nearly perpendicularly on the coated glass and reflects into your eyes. The layer of plastic looks dark. Find the smallest possible nonzero value for the thickness of the layer.arrow_forwardAn instructor places a fluid substance, with a refractive index of 1.61, between two horizontal panes of flat glass (each of which has n = 1.55). She then illuminates the assembly from above with monochromatic light (? = 700 nm). What is the minimum thickness (in nm) that the liquid layer must have, if the light is to be strongly reflected back toward its source? ??nmarrow_forward
- A technician places a fluid substance, with a refractive index of 1.75, between two horizontal panes of flat glass (each of which has n = 1.40). He then illuminates the assembly from above with monochromatic light (? = 550 nm). What is the minimum thickness (in nm) that the liquid layer must have if the light is to be strongly reflected back toward its source?arrow_forwardA light ray is incident at 45° on a glass block immersed inside a liquid of refractive index nį = 1.33 as shown in the figure below. In this configuration, the refractive ray skims the bottom surface. Determine the refractive index of the glass, ng. ng 45° 1.66 1.55 O 1.69 1.49 1.63 1.58arrow_forwardThe Michelson interferometer can be used to measure the index of refraction of a gas by placing an evacuated transparent tube in the light path along one arm of the device. Fringe shifts occur as the gas is slowly added to the tube. Assume 580-nm light is used, the tube is 5.40 cm long, and 152 fringe shifts occur as the pressure of the gas in the tube increases to atmospheric pressure. What is the index of refraction of the gas? Hint: The fringe shifts occur because the wavelength of the light changes inside the gas-filled tube.
