Write an equation to represent the cost of the class and x bags of clay.

Answer to Problem 53PPS
The equation that represents the cost of the class y and x bags of clay :
y = 15( x − 1) + 40
Explanation of Solution
Given:
A $40 enrollment fee covers supplies and materials , including one ten-pound bag of clay.Any extra bags of clay cost $15 each.
Calculation :
Let
y = The total cost of the class
x = Total bags of clay
Since the $40 enrollment fee includes 1 bag of clay, so the extra cost for clay bags will apply on ( x − 1) bags of clay.
Cost of 1 extra bag of clay = $15
So, cost of ( x − 1) extra bags of clay = 15( x − 1)
So, the total cost of the class = enrollment fee + extra clay bag cost = 40 + 15( x − 1)
The equation that represents the cost of the class y and x bags of clay :
y = 15( x − 1) + 40
