The transport of water, food, and other dissolved substances in plants is possible because of long distance and short distance transport mechanisms. Short distance transport mechanisms are facilitated by apoplastic, symplastic, and transmembrane pathways, while long distance transport mechanism uses the vascular tissues to accomplish the task.
