Anthropoids, a monophyletic Haplorhine lineage, gives rise to two lineages: one ancestral to old world monkeys and another related to humans and apes. The earliest ‘hominoid’ (ape) fossils date to the early Miocene, approximately 23 million years ago but the oldest known old world monkeys were reported several years later.
