Concept explainers
When a car is moved into a painting chamber, a mist of paint is sprayed around it. When the body of the car is given a sudden electric charge and the mist of paint is attracted to it, presto—the car is quickly and uniformly painted. W*hat does the phenomenon of polarization have to do with this?
To explain: The role of polarization phenomenon in the given situation.
Answer to Problem 42A
Due to charge polarization, charges present in the paint gets attracted towards the conducting surface.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
When a charged object is placed near an object, then charges are induced in the object such as it acts as a dipole.
When the mist of paint is spread near the surface of the car, then the surface induces charge from the paint. Due to charge induction, the surface of the car becomes a dipole, in which positive and negative charges are set in the opposite direction. This process keeps going on until all the paint is equally spread over the surface. Thus, due to polarization, equal and uniformly charges distribute over the surface of the car.
Conclusion:
Thus, due to charge polarization, equal and uniform charges distribute over the surface of the car from the mist of the paint.
