When a charged object polarizes another, why is there an attraction between the objects?
The reason that why there is an attraction between the objects.
Answer to Problem 21A
There is an attraction between the objects because the unlike charges are closer.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Separation of opposite charges in an object is defined as polarization. Suppose all the positive charge gets separated on the left side of the object and the negative charge get separated on the right of the object. Hence the charged object can induce the movement of electrons.
When a charged object polarizes another object, then the like charge are away from each other and the unlike charges are closer. Hence, the force of attraction between the unlike charges is greater than the force of repulsion between the like charges. That is why there is an attraction between the objects.
Conclusion:
Thus, there is an attraction between the objects because the unlike charges are closer.
