To discuss:
The two kind of electron microscopes; why they have enhanced the modern understanding of the cells; and the distinction between magnification and resolution in microscopy.
Introduction:
Cytology or cell biology refers to the branch of biology concerned with the scientific study of the structure and function of cells. In 1839, cell theory was proposed by Theodor Schwann and Matthias Schleiden. All living organisms, from simple (e.g. bacteria) to complex (e.g. human), are made up of cells (one or more) and its products. Cells are regarded as the simplest unit (structural and functional) of life. Cells are made only from previously existing cells. Cellular membrane, nucleus, and cytoplasm are the three major components of a cell.

- What is the importance of resolution, magnification and contrast in microscopyarrow_forwardIn your everyday life, you have probably noticed thatcertain instruments are ideal for certain situations. Forexample, you would use a spoon rather than a fork to eatsoup because a spoon is shaped for scooping, while soupwould slip between the tines of a fork. The use of idealinstruments also applies in science. In what situation(s)would the use of a light microscope be ideal, and why?arrow_forwardA 50 words essay of how important to have an adequate knowledge of biochemistry in understanding pathologyarrow_forward

- What is purpose of mounting of microscope slidesarrow_forwardBoth light and electron microscopy are commonly used to visualize cells, cell structures, and the location of specific molecules. Explain why a scientist may choose one or the other microscopy technique for use in research.arrow_forwardWhat description best describes the compound light microscope? Uses a beam of electrons is transmitted through a specimen to form an image. Has more than one lens and its own light source. In this type of microscope, there are ocular lenses in the binocular eyepieces and objective lenses in a rotating nosepiece closer to the specimen. An optical imaging technique for increasing optical resolution and contrast of a micrograph by means of using a spatial pinhole to block out-of-focus light in image formation. Designed for low magnification observation of a sample, typically using light reflected from the surface of an object rather than transmitted through it.arrow_forward

The interaction of the laser beam with the cell surface allows the imaging of individual macromolecules O Only out-of-focus light enters the microscope lens, making the object appear illuminated against a dark background The use of electrons instead of light to image the specimen results in greatly increased resolving power O Optical sections in a single plane of focus can be visualized at different depths in the specimen The natural contrast of an unstained specimen is enhancedarrow_forwardMicroscope Structure and Function Compound Light Microscope Structures: Label the names of the microscope components (structures) on the diagram below.
