Chapter 3.1, Problem 1TQ
Summary Introduction

To review:

The chemicals that are present in the greatest and the smallest number in the bacterial cell. Also reveal the reason behind the bacterial cell possessing 100 times the lipid molecules as compared to the strands of ribonucleic acid (RNA).

Introduction:

Bacterial cells are prokaryotic cells that do not possess a membrane encircled nucleus and organelles. These cells consist of chromosomes and circular DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) along with ribosome, cytoplasm, and nucleoid. These cells are found in various shapes like cylindrical, minute spheres, filamentous chains, flagellated rods, and spiral threads. There are various intracellular components that are present inside the cell.

The following figure shows a typical phospholipid. Suppose this molecule was incorporated into a cell membrane. Which letter indicates the portion of the molecule that would be exposed to the aqueous environment? CH₂ I H₂C-N¹-CH₂ CH₂ A H₂C H₂C H₂C CH₂ CH₂O HO CH ₂ H₂C H₂C CH₂ OH HO O–CH, H₂C H₂C H₂C CH₂ HC CH₂ CH₂ CH-O CH-OH H₂C CH₂ H₂C CH₂ H₂C/ H₂C H₂C H₂C H₂C CH₂ H₂C CH₂ CH₂ CH₂ CH₂ CH₂ CH₂ CH₂ H₂C/
The compound illustrated below is an antibiotic able to transport the ions across the cell membrane. Considering the structure of the molecule, explain why it is able to carry out this task.
Gram-positive eubacterial cells (like Clostridium perfringens) contain which components? a cell wall made of pseudomurein, and membrane fatty acids ester-linked to glycerol (G-3-P lipids) a cell wall made of peptidoglycan, and membrane alcohols ether-linked to glycerol (G-1-P lipids) a cell wall made of cellulose, and membrane alcohols ether-linked to glycerol (G-1-P lipids) a cell wall made of pseudomurein, and membrane alcohols ether-linked to glycerol (G-1-P lipids) a cell wall made of peptidoglycan, and membrane fatty acids ester-linked to glycerol (G-3-P lipids)
