Initial magnitude of car’s displacement is 225 km in west direction. Then the car turns 45o South of west and moves 98km .

Formula used:

The magnitude of the resultant vector and direction can be obtained using the following formulae:

  R=P2+Q2+2PQcosθα=tan1( Qsinθ P+Qcosθ)

Where, P and Q are vectors and θ is the angle between them.

Calculations:

As per question:

  P=225kmQ=98kmθ=45o

Substitute the values and solve to find the magnitude of the resultant displacement.

  R= 2252+ 982+2( 225)( 98)cos 45oR=302.34km

Now, substitute the values to find the direction:

  α=tan1( Qsinθ P+Qcosθ)α=tan1( 98×sin 45 o 225+98cos 45 o )α=13.2o

It will be directed South of West.
