Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The phenomenon of having swollen fingers and ankles after eating salty food has to be discussed in terms of how the kidneys operate.

Concept Introduction:

Body fluid and ${\text{Na}}^{\text{+}}$:

Kidneys have an important role in fluid balance and metabolic process. The factors which affect the amount of water reabsorbed are given below:

• Osmolarity of the fluids passing through the kidneys.
• Permeability of the collecting duct controlled by ADH.
• Amount of the ${\text{Na}}^{\text{+}}$ actively reabsorbed.

There will be a greater water reabsorption, higher interstitial osmolarity and decreased urine volume due to increased sodium reabsorption.
