Chapter 29, Problem 29.45AP

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The result of the allosteric interaction with haemoglobin as oxygen binds to it has to be given.

Concept Introduction:

Haemoglobin:

  • Composed of four polypeptide chain with a quaternary structure.
  • A central heme molecule is there in each protein chain and each of the four hemes can bind with one O2 molecule.
  • Each heme molecule in its centre has iron(II) (Fe+2).
  • The bright red haemoglobin with four oxygens is called oxy haemoglobin.
  • The dark red-purple haemoglobin in which one or more oxygen is lost is called deoxyhaemoglobin.

Allosteric interaction: The protein haemoglobin is an allosteric protein. The meaning of allosteric interaction is that binding of oxygen to one of the subunits is affected by its interactions with the other subunits.

(b)

Oxygen has an allosteric interaction with hemoglobin. What are the results of this interaction as oxygen a) binds to and b) is released from hemoglobin?
The differences between hemoglobin and myoglobin include a) hemoglobin exhibits a lower degree of O2 saturation at all physiologically relevant partial pressures of O2 than does myoglobin. b) all of the answers arecorrect. c) hemoglobin is a tetramer whereas myoglobin is a monomer. O d) hemoglobin exhibits O2 binding cooperativity while myoglobin does not.
Why does Fe2+ not fit perfectly into the center hemoglobin's heme pocket, while Fe3+ does ift perfectly into center hemoglobin's heme pocket? A) Fe2+ has a larger effective nuclear charge than Fe3+ . B) Fe2+ is to reactive to stably fit into hemoglobin's heme pocket. C) Fe2+ had a wrinkled shirt D) Fe2+ is repelled by the heme's coordinating nitrogens E) Fe3+ is denser and has a smaller ionic radius than Fe2+
