Body fluids: About 60% of human body is water and this water occupies in two departments called the intracellular and extracellular compartments. The fluid inside the cells is known as intracellular fluids and the fluid outside the cells is known as extracellular fluids.

In-order for a substance to be soluble in water, it must be an ion, a small polar molecule or a large molecule having polar hydrophilic groups on its surface.

The major types of solute present in body fluids are inorganic ions and ionized biomolecules and the inorganic ions collectively known as electrolytes.
