Some Archaea and Bacteria are planktonic and possess the ability to float in the water with the help of gas vesicles. In a given species, the number of gas vesicles present in a cell varies from a few numbers to hundreds. Such vesicles are permeable to various gases, but impermeable to solutes and water. The diameter and length of gas vesicles vary depending on the species.
