Summary Introduction

In general, gliding motility happens along the long axis of the bacterial cell. Compared to swimming motility, this form of gliding movement is smoother and slower (up to 10 µm/sec in some bacteria). Though gliding motility is relatively slow, it still provides a way of movement to such non-swimming bacteria. Bacteria showing gliding motility includes cyanobacteria (filamentous), myxobacteria (gram-negative bacteria), and species of Flavobacterium and Cytophaga.
