Chapter 25.2, Problem 3CC
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The formation of cell to cell attachments of volvox, plants and fungi were formed using similar or different molecules.

Introduction:

For the origin of multicellularity, the cells need to communicate with each other. The protein domain called cadherins function in cell signaling. On comparing the genome of animal cells and choanoflagellates, it was found that both contain similar protein domains.

The eukaryotes are believed to have evolved from protists as shown by the morphological and genetic studies. Protists are closely related to plants, fungi and animals as compared to other protists.

WHAT IF? If the plant cell wall or the animal extracellular matrix were impermeable, what effect would thishave on cell function?
Or. Foyez Samar The volume enclosed by the plasma membrane of plant cells is often much larger the c corresponding volume in animal cells. The most regsengble explanation for this observation Is that A) plant cells are capable of having a much higher surface-to-volume ratio than animal cells. B) plant cells have a much more highly convoluted (folded) plasma membrane than animal cens. C) plant cells contain a large vacuole that reduces the volume of the cytoplasm. D) animal cells are more spherical, whereas plant cells are elongated. 12 A u
WHAT IF? Some membrane proteins diffuse faster in the plasma membrane when the cytoskeleton or the extracellular matrix is artificially removed than when cells are unperturbed. Explain why.
