Kyle Boulard, a 35-year-old male, is believed to be one of the primary causes of the a bus accident on Route 91. Passengers on the bus reported that Mr. Boulard was clearly intoxicated when he boarded the bus. According to these reports, Mr. Boulard behaved erratically, appeared disoriented, and left his seat and staggered down the aisle. Just prior to the accident, he had stumbled into the driver’s compartment. Paramedics found Mr. Boulard in a disoriented state when they arrived on the scene, but noted only minor injuries. A “fruity acetone combined with alcohol” smell was noted on his breath. What follows is a summary of the notable test results:
General | Blood | Urine |
BP: 95/58 | pH: 7.1 | Odor: “fruity acetone” |
HR: 110 | Glucose: 345 mg/dl | pH: 4.3 |
Glucose: strongly positive | ||
Blood alcohol: 110 mg/dl |
Explain how the pH of Mr. Boulard’s blood and urine is related to the ketone bodies measured in each of these fluids.

- A 35-year old woman became severely depressed after the sudden death of her husband. Two months later, she was brought to the emergency room by her friend because of extreme weakness and lethargy. She appeared thin and pale. Upon history taking, the doctor found that she had not eaten for several weeks. Analysis of the plasma sample indicated elevated levels of alanine, acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). However, her plasma glucose concentration was low (55mg/dL). She was hospitalized, given intravenous feeding, antidepressant medications and subsequently shifted to a 1800kCal (7500kJ) diet. Her recovery was uneventful. Why did the patient have elevated levels of alanine, acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate and blood urea nitrogen (BUN)? How could the patient maintain her plasma glucose levels within normal limits even though she was not eating?Suggest, why the patient’s recovery was smooth after being shifted to a 1800kCal diet.arrow_forwardDuring an evening stroll around Centennial Park, you and a few classmate decide to grab Krystal Burgers prior to the walk.
