The rough ER seems to have a quality control system in place to remove defective products. The system of ubiquitin-proteasome is a crucial system of protein degradation. Misfolded proteins are marked with ubiquitin which marks the destruction of these flawed proteins. A proteasome is a protein degradation system and also a non-membranous organelle.
