Introduction:

Endoplasmic Reticulum is a continuous membrane system which is distributed extensively throughout the cytosol. Two forms of endoplasmic reticulum are present on the basis of physical and chemical characteristics and they are smooth ER and rough ER. Rough ER contains ribosomes which gives it its rough appearance. Ribosomes are the site of synthesis of protein. So, rough ER specializes in protein synthesis. Smooth ER lack ribosomes so it does not involve protein synthesis. It acts as packaging as well as discharge site for molecules of ER.
