Concept explainers
Whether the speed of all molecules or atoms in liquid is same or not.
Answer to Problem 1A
The speed of all molecules or atoms will be same in liquid if there is no external force acting.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction: The speed of molecules will depend on the phase of the matter such as solid, liquid & gas.
The speed of the molecules in liquid may be assumed same if there are no external forces. On heating or cooling, the speed of molecules increases or decreases from bottom to top. The bottom molecules have higher velocity as they get heated first. Thus, if the effect of external forces is neglected, the speed is assumed to be same for all molecules in a liquid.
Conclusion:
The speed of all molecules or atoms will be same in liquid.
