Concept explainers
To Explain: Antifreeze or any soluble substance put in water lowers its freezing temperature.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
The soluble substance in water leads to lowering of the freezing point as the solute particle does not allow the water molecules to settle down to form a solid.
As to make solid, it needs to be cooled at a lower temperature than its freezing point. For the lower freezing point to be obtained, some solute particles are added in the water.
Conclusion:
The solute particle will act as barriers in formation of solid substance, so to make the solid one would have to cool to a lower temperature below the freezing point.
