On a hot day, you remove from a picnic cooler a chilled watermelon and some chilled sandwiches. Which will remain cool for a longer time? Why?
To identify: Whether a watermelon or sandwich will remain cool for a longer time.
Answer to Problem 40A
Watermelon will remain cool for longer time than sandwich.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Specific heat capacity: It is the heat capacity of a substance divided by its mass.
Mass of watermelon is greater in comparison to mass of sandwiches. Also, shape of watermelon is nearly spherical therefore the ratio of volume and surface area of watermelon will be higher in comparison to the ratio of volume and surface area of sandwich. The water melon has large amount of water in comparison to sandwiches and water has higher specific heat capacity therefore watermelon will remain cool for longer time.
Conclusion:
Heat stored in water melon will be for longer time than sandwich.
