Chapter 21, Problem 2DAA
Summary Introduction

To determine: The group of children averaged the fewest mosquitoes attracted.

Concept introduction: Plasmodium is one among the genus of unicellular eukaryotes that are obligate parasites of vertebrates and the insects. They infect the humans who are mostly prone to malarial infection. It is transmitted through the bite of a female Anopheles mosquito. The life cycle involves mosquito and humans as a host. During the blood meal, the malaria-infected mosquito inoculates the sporozoites into the human host. The sporozoite infects the liver cells and mature into schizonts that rupture and release the merozoites.

Choose an example of a host adaptation that may not look advantageous at first, but was determined to reduce parasite load. Explain the mechanism for why this came to be and why it was advantageous.
Is it more beneficial for Neodermata to have one host or two hosts? Neodermatahas two classes: class Trematoda and class Monogenea. Class Trematoda has the subclass Digenea, which has organisms that live through at least two different hosts. An example of this is Fasciola hepatica, the sheep's liver fluke. Class Monogenea has organisms that only need to live through one host. Is it better to have a simple or complex life cycle? Which lives longer? Has more energy? Does more damage or good?
Although they are not photosynthetic, apicomplexan parasites such as Plasmodium have modified plastids. Describe a current hypothesis that explains this observation
