Chapter 21, Problem 3DAA
Summary Introduction

To determine: The percentage of the total number of mosquitoes that were attracted to the most attractive group.

Concept introduction: Plasmodium is one among the genus of unicellular eukaryotes that are obligate parasites of vertebrates and the insects. They infect the humans and are responsible for most malarial infections. It is transmitted through the bite of female anopheles mosquito. The life cycle involves the mosquito and human as the host. When they ingest from the human blood, the malaria infected mosquito inoculates the sporozoites into the human host. The sporozoite infects the liver cells and matures into schizonts that rupture and release the merozoites.

Choose an example of a host adaptation that may not look advantageous at first, but was determined to reduce parasite load. Explain the mechanism for why this came to be and why it was advantageous.
Even though genetically engineered mosquitoes might be developed that do not allow the reproduction of malaria protozoa, these mosquitoes would have little, if any, immediate effect on the spread of the disease. Why should this be so? What would have to happen for these mosquitoes to significantly affect the spread of malaria?
Why do only female mosquitoes transmit malaria?
