BIO Base Pairing in DNA, II. Refer to Exercise 21.21. Figure E21.22 shows the bonding of cytosine and guanine. The O—H and H—N distances are each 0.110 nm. In this case, assume that the bonding is due only to the forces along the O—H—O, N—H—N, and O—H—N combinations, and assume also that these three combinations are parallel to each other. Calculate the net force that cytosine exerts on guanine due to the preceding three combinations. Is this force attractive or repulsive?

- Because of their net negative charge, bacteria are easily attracted to and adhere to surfaces on which they can proliferate, forming bacterial biofilms, thin films of bacteria coating the surface. Bacterial biofilms are especially problematic on indwelling medical devices (IMDS), which are devices inserted into a patient and include catheters, heart valves, and artificial joints. Contaminated IMDS are the most common source of infection in humans. A number of mitigation methods are in use today, including antibacterial graphene oxide coatings and the use of electric fields and surface charges to repel bacteria. In a hospital operating room, due to an unexpected complication in the surgical procedure, and in violation of protocol, a catheter that was removed from its sterile pouch before the complication is being used hours after being exposed to the air in the room. - You are still fascinated by the process of inkjet printing, as described in the opening storyline for this chapter. You convince your father to take you to his manufacturing facility to see the machines that print expiration dates on eggs. You strike up a conversation with the technician operating the machine. He tells you that the ink drops are created using a piezoelectric crystal, acoustic waves, and the Plateau–Rayleigh instability, which creates uniform drops of mass m = 1.25 x 10-8 g. While you don’t understand the fancy words, you do recognize mass! The technician also tells you that the drops are charged to a controllable value of q and then projected vertically downward between parallel deflecting plates at a constant terminal speed of 18.5 m/s. The plates are ℓ = 2.25 cm long and have a uniform electric field of magnitude E = 6.35 x 104 N/C between them. Noting your interest in the process, the technician asks you, “If the position on the egg at which the drop is to be…arrow_forwardYou have a summer job as an assistant technician for a telephone company in California.During a recent earthquake, a 1.0-mile long underground telephone line is crushed atsome point. This telephone line is made up of two parallel copper wires of the samediameter and same length, which are normally not connected. At the place where theline is crushed, the two wires make contact. Your boss wants you to find this placeso that the wire can be dug up and fixed. You disconnect the line from the telephonesystem by disconnecting both wires of the line at both ends. You then go to one end ofthe line and connect one terminal of a 6.0-V battery to one wire, and the other terminalof the battery to one terminal of an ammeter. When the other terminal of the ammeteris connected to the other wire, the ammeter shows that the current through the wire is1.0 A. You then disconnect everything and travel to the other end of the telephone line, where you repeat the process and find a current of 1/3 Aarrow_forwardCompare the gravitational and electrical forces between an electron and a proton in the hydrogen atom (separated by 10-10 m).
