Concept explainers
You overhear a conversation between two physics types. One says that birds couldn’t fly before the time of Bernoulli. The other says that it was not so. Birds could fly before the time of Bernoulli but couldn’t fly before the time of Newton. Humor aside, what points are they making?
To explain: The points regarding birds fly.
Answer to Problem 52A
One is Bernoulli principle and other is Newton third law.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Bernoulli principle: It states that an increase in the speed of a fluid will occur with the decrease in static pressure.
Newton’s third law: It states that every reaction has opposite an equal reaction.
Some people thought that birds can’t fly before the time of Newton and some thought birds can`t fly before the time of Bernoulli. Some people thought that while flying birds follow Newton’s third law, they suggested that while flying, bird put a force on air and at the same time air resistance exerts an equal force on the wings of bird. Due to these two equal and opposite forces bird could fly. On the other hand some people thought that while flying, birds obey Bernoulli’s principle, they suggested that while flying, shape of bird’s wings causes air to flow from the top of wingsfor longer time which reduce air pressure and give a lift.
