Concept explainers
What physics principle underlies the following three observations? When passing an oncoming truck on the highway, your car tends to swerve toward the truck. The canvas roof of a convertible automobile bulges upward when the car is traveling at high speeds. The windows of older passenger trains sometimes break when a high-speed train passes by on the next track.
Principle of physics based on the observations.
Answer to Problem 49A
All three observations are based on the Bernoulli’s principle.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Bernoulli’s principle states that pressure decreases when the speed of the fluid increases.
In the first observation, when a truck passes with the car on a highway, then the pressure in between decreases. This results in a decrease in the distance between both car and truck.
In the second observation, pressure above the canvas roof of a convertible automobile decreases, then the velocity of air increases. The pressure inside the automobile is greater than the pressure above the canvas roof. That is why roof bulges upward.
In the last observation, when a high-speed train passes by an old passenger train then pressure between the gap decreases. Because of the increased pressure difference between the inside and outside of the old passenger train, windows cracks.
Conclusion:
Thus, all three observations are based on Bernoulli’s principle.
