Chapter 20, Problem 10CT
Summary Introduction

To answer:

The features shared by smallpox and polioviruses that helped medical science to get rid of these diseases.

Introduction:

Poliovirus is a small single-stranded RNA virus that spread from person to person via the oral route. Poliovirus infection is more evident in summer because warm weather supports the spread of this virus. Smallpox is a disease caused by the variola virus. It is a large virus with double-stranded DNA. The virus is transmitted by inhaling the virus from oral or droplets from an infected person. One-third of the people with smallpox died from the disease.

Although the virus that causes smallpox has been eradicated, there are still stocks of the virus, which are kept in labs in the US and Russia. Why may someone argue that these stocks be destroyed?
Which of the following statements regarding retroviruses is FALSE? A)  a cellular enzyme converts the RNA genome into DNA B)  double-stranded DNA is transcribed into mRNA by cellular enzymes C)  retroviral genomes consist of positive-sense RNA D)  the virus commonly integrates into the host chromosome as a provirus E)  viral RNA enters the nucleus F)  ALL of these statements are TRUE
Which of the following highly contagious viruses is a single-stranded ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus with a helical capsid and envelope and is transmitted by coming in contact with respiratory secretions? "This is a highly contagious respiratory illness transmitted when an infected person coughs or sneezes virus particles into the air," the health department said in a written statement. "It's so contagious that if one person is sick and spreading measles, nine out of 10 people around them who aren't immune will get it, too." Group of answer choices a. Measles b. Parvovirus c. Coxsackie virus A d. Rhinovirus
