To determine

The number of molecules of niacin in 14mg of C6NH5O2.

Answer to Problem 2.1CYU

The number of molecules of niacin in 14mg of C6NH5O2 is 6.85×1019molecules.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The amount of vitamin B3, niacin or C6NH5O2 is m=14mg.

The number of mole of carbon is nc=6.

The number of mole of hydrogen is nh=5.

The number of mole of nitrogen is nnit=1mole.

The number of mole of oxygen is no=2mole.

Formula used:

The molar mass of niacin is given by

  mn=ncmc+nhmh+nnitmnit+nomo

The number of moles is given by

  n=mmm

The number of molecule is given by

  N=nNA

Calculation:

The molar mass of carbon is mc=12g/mole.

The molar mass of hydrogen is mh=1g/mole.

The molar mass of nitrogen is mnit=14g/mole.

The molar mass of oxygen is mo=16g/mole.

The molar mass of niacin is calculated as follows:

  mn=ncmc+nhmh+nnitmnit+nomo=6(12g/mole)+5(1g/mole)+1(14g/mole)+2(16g/mole)=(72g/mole)+(5g/mole)+(14g/mole)+(32g/mole)=123g/mole

The number of moles is calculated as follows:

  n=mmm=( 14mg)( 123g/ mole )=( 14mg)( 1g 1000mg )( 123g/ mole )=1.138×104mole

The Avogadro number is NA=6.02 × 1023molecules/mole.

The number of molecule is calculated as follows:

  N=nNA=(1.138× 10 4mole)(6.02 ×  10 23molecules/mole)=6.85×1019molecules

Conclusion:

Thus, the number of molecules of niacin in 14mg of C6NH5O2 is 6.85×1019molecules.
