Summary Introduction

Case summary:

Turning points on the road to management.

Characters in the case:

No prominent characters in the case.

Adequate information:

Step 1. Interview a manager whom you know at your university or place of employment, or a parent or friend who is a manager, and ask the following question.

Step 2. Divide into groups of four to six members. One person at a time, share what you learned about a manager's career turning points.

Step 3. Have you personally experienced any turning points in your life?

To determine:

What was a turning point in your life that led you to become the person, and manager that you are today? Collect information on a second turning point if the interviewee has one to describe. Your goal is to learn the specifics about how each turning point led on to the person's current position in life.

What themes or patterns characterize the turning points among the managers interviewed.

Each group member should describe his or her personal turning point to the group. With the additional turning points, analyze again for themes and patterns across all the turning points.

Step 4. What lessons does your group learn from its analysis? How does history (events, decisions) play a role in the lives and careers of the managers interviewed, and in the lives of your group members?

Innovative Automotive Designs (IAD) is a major manufacturer of high-performance batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), supplying industry leaders like Tesla, Ford, and General Motors. IAD is rolling out a new series of EV batteries designed for next-generation vehicles. This latest battery family is marketed as ultra-efficient, achieving 50% more energy output than previous versions while consuming less power. IAD engineers employed a groundbreaking production method, allowing them to integrate more energy cells per battery pack and ensure exceptional thermal regulation, keeping temperatures low even under maximum power demands. If successful, this new battery series will mark a pivotal shift for IAD, which has been gradually advancing in the highly competitive battery market and closing the gap with its biggest competitor. The first batch of batteries is nearly ready for customer delivery, and top management is eager to verify the quality and reliability of the production process.…
As you read in the report that you received, Innovative Automotive Designs has made good progress on the production of our newest EV battery family.  However, I would like you to take a closer look at the samples from our initial batch of batteries and analyze the battery efficiency and thermal data that I have shared with you. The success of this new product depends on the manufacturing process being able to achieve required benchmarks. Your analysis and feedback would help us in this regard. I understand that in MBA 521 you learned the methods required to systematically analyze the data and give me a recommendation.  Specifically, your analysis needs to address the following issues: The battery temperatures are a major concern for us. Can you analyze and describe the sample data? What are the average and median temperatures? How much variability is there in the temperatures? Is there anything that stands out? Our engineers’ assumption is that the temperature data is normally…
