GO Adiabatic wind. The normal airflow over the Rocky Mountains is west to east. The air loses much of its moisture content and is chilled as it climbs the western side of the mountains, When it descends on the eastern side, the increase in pressure toward lower altitudes causes the temperature to increase. The flow, then called a chinook wind, can rapidly raise the air temperature at the base of the mountains. Assume that the air pressure p depends on altitude y according to p = p0 exp (−ay), where p0 = 1.00 atm and a = 1.16 × 10−4 m−1. Also assume that the ratio of the molar specific heats is

- An airplane passenger has 100cm3 of air in his stomach just before the plane takes off from a sea-level airport. What volume will the air have at cruising altitude if cabin pressure drops to 7.50×104 Pa?Assume that the temperature of the air in the stomach remains constant.arrow_forwardThe temperature in a pressure cooker during cooking at sea level is measured to be 270°F. Determine the absolute pressure inside the cooker in psia and in atm. Would you modify your answer if the place were at a higher elevation? The saturation pressure of water at 270°F is 41.877 psia. The standard atmospheric pressure at sea level is 1 atm 14.7 psia. Pressure cooker T F The absolute pressure is. 56.577 psia. The absolute pressure is 3.8499 atm. The elevation has no effect v on the absolute pressure inside when the temperature is maintained constant at 270°F.arrow_forwardThe pressure in an automobile tire depends on the tem- perature of the air in the tire. When the air temperature is 25°C, the pressure gage reads 210 kPa. If the volume of the tire is 0.025 m³, determine the pressure rise in the tire when the air temperature in the tire rises to 50°C. Also, determine the amount of air that must be bled off to restore pressure to its original value at this temperature. Assume the atmospheric pressure to be 100 kPa. - A certain ideal gas has 3 translational degrees of freedom and 3 other degrees of freedom. The initial temperature of the gas is 300K. You add 4 J energy at constant volume to the gas, By how much does the translational energy On J) of the gas change? It is thrust vertically down, closed-end on top, into a freshwater lake until the water rises halfway up in the pipe. What is the depth h of the lower end of the pipe? Assume that the temperature is the same everywhere and does not change.arrow_forwardAn air bubble has a volume of 1.50 cm3 when it is released by a submarine 100 m below the surface of a lake. What is the volume of the bubble when it reaches the surface? Assume the temperature and the number of air molecules in the bubble remain constant during its ascent.arrow_forward
- At 28 m below the surface of the sea (density of 1476 kg/m³), where the temperature is 6°C, a diver exhales an air bubble having a volume of 0.5 cm³. If the surface temperature of the sea is 22 C, what is the volume of the bubble immediately 3 before it breaks the surface? The acceleration .2 of gravity is 9.8 m/s² and the atmospheric pressure is 1.02 × 10° Pa. 3 Answer in units of cm°.arrow_forwardDuring inhalation, a person's diaphragm and intercostal muscles contract, expanding the chest cavity and lowering the internal air pressure below ambient so that air flows in through the mouth and nose to the lungs. Suppose a person's lungs hold 1220 mL of air at a pressure of 1.00 atm. If they expand their chest cavity by 530 mL while keeping their nose and mouth closed so that no air is inhaled, what will be the air pressure in their lungs in atm? Assume the air temperature remains constant. HINT atm Need Help? Read It Watch Itarrow_forward1034. The motion of a particle starting from rest is governed by the a-t curve shown in Fig. P-1034. - Atmospheric pressure atop Mt. Everest is 3.30 × 104 N/m2. (a) What is the partial pressure of oxygen there if it is 20.9% of the air? (b) What percentoxygen should a mountain climber breathe so that its partial pressure is the same as at sea level, where atmospheric pressure is 1.01 × 105 N/m2. (c) One of the most severe problems for those climbing very high mountains is the extreme drying of breathing passages. Why does this drying occur?arrow_forward9. ssm When a .22-caliber rifle is fired, the expanding gas from the burn- ing gunpowder creates a pressure behind the bullet. This pressure causes the force that pushes the bullet through the barrel. The barrel has a length of 0.61 m and an opening whose radius is 2.8 × 10-³ m. A bullet (mass = 2.6 X 10-³ kg) has a speed of 370 m/s after passing through this barrel. Ignore friction and determine the average pressure of the expand- ing gas.arrow_forwardThe ideal gas law is given by, PV=nRT.
