Chapter 19, Problem 32RA
Summary Introduction

To review:

The following:

1. The reason behind increased number of adipocytes due to consumption of high-fat diet during childhood.

2. The relation of the above mentioned process with the capability of adipocytes in regulating insulin sensitivity of the skeletal muscles in adults.

Introduction:

Adipocytes are the cells of the adipose tissue that generally store body fat and are present in the liver and skeletal muscles. Fats are very rich energy sources but are not the primary sources for energy production. They are only utilized as energy production substrates when glycogen store in the body is depleted or enough glucose is not being provided through the diet.

Students have asked these similar questions
Name two proteins that are effectors of the insulin signaling pathway in adipocytes, liver, or muscle cells. Explain how these effector proteins address the conditions that triggered insulin release.
Explain why insulin is required for adipocytes to synthesize triacylglycerols from fatty acids.
Bodybuilders have been known to inject insulin to increase muscle mass because it stimulates protein anabolism. What is one of the risks associated with this practice in terms of K+ levels: elevated blood plasma K+ (hyperkalemia) or decreased blood plasma K+ (hypokalemia)? Could the practice of injecting insulin to increase muscle mass be fatal?
