Answer to Problem 99A

The ray configuration is not achievable when nglass=1.5 .

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The index of refraction is ng=1.5 .

The given figure is shown below.

  Glencoe Physics: Principles and Problems, Student Edition, Chapter 18, Problem 99A

Formula used:

The expression for Snell’s law of refraction is,

  n1sinθ1=n2sinθ2

Here, n1 is the index of refraction of the first medium, θ1 is the angle of incidence of the first medium, n2 is the index of refraction of the second medium, and θ2 is the angle of incidence of the second medium

Consider the given Figure.The ray from the light enters the glass at an angle of θ1 and refracted the glass at an angle of θ2 .The angle of incidence must be in air.

Hence, the index of refraction of the first medium nA=1.000 .

The angle of refraction by using Snell’s law of refraction is,

  nAsinθ1=ngsinθ2sinθ2=nAsinθ1ngθ2=sin1((1.00)sin90°1.5)θ2=42°

The angle θ2 is,

  θ2=90°θ2θ2=90°42°θ2=48°

The critical angle of glass is,

  sinθc=nAngθc=sin1(1.001.5)θc=42°

The angle θ2>θc . So the light reflects back into the glass and one cannot see out of an adjacent side.Hence, the ray configuration is not achievable when nglass=1.5 .

Conclusion:

Thus, it is proved that the ray configuration is not achievable when nglass=1.5 .
